Mohave County Arizona Hiking Information
 

Mohave County is in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of the 2020 census, its population was 213,267. The county seat is Kingman, and the largest city is Lake Havasu City. It is the fifth largest county in the United States (by area).

There is hiking all over the Mohave County. Within the borders of Mohave County, one can also experience much of the Grand Canyon National Park. These hiking spots in Mohave County offer a wide range of experiences, from easy walks to challenging hikes, all amidst stunning desert landscapes and unique rock formations.

Mohave County has a wide variety of wildlife including mule deer, elk, wild donkeys, fox, coyotes, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, chipmunks, skunks, lizards, Sonoran desert tortoise, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, bobcats, rattlesnakes, and many smaller mammals and reptiles.

The largest wild burro population in the country is located in the Black Mountains of Mohave County and there are two herds of wild mustangs on this land. You may also come across range cattle. Usually the cattle will move out of your way, but if they have young calves you'll want to be cautious. Never get between and cow and her calf.

A wide variety of birds including the golden eagle can be seen soaring the skies, There are also Gambel's quail, mourning dove, and several types of raptors.

Cerbat Foothills Recreation Area (CFRA) covers 11,300 acres of Mohave Desert grassland and offers 4 different trail systems totaling about 19 miles, which are open to hikers and joggers, equestrian use and bicyclists. Vegetation in the area includes yucca, beavertail, prickly pear, creosote and mesquite.

Hualapai Mountain Park Cabins, Camping, RV Park, and Picnicking is just a few minutes away with over 2,300 acres of truly unique cool, clear, green refreshment of the pine forest country. It is perfect for a picnic. This park near Kingman offers a variety of hiking trails through pine forests, with options for all skill levels.

Hualapai Mountain Park is often referred to as a biological island because of its elevation above the surrounding countryside which consist of semi-arid desert type landscapes. The total beauty, character, and history of Hualapai Mountain Park cannot be fully expressed in words, it is something that must be experienced.

Davis Camp Trails - The Colorado River Heritage Trail will offer you not only great exercise but spectacular views. The whole loop will have parks, restrooms, kayak launch, fishing nodes and tons of information about the area and Davis Dam.

Mount Tipton Wilderness - Located near Dolan Springs, this wilderness area features rugged terrain and trails that lead to the summit of Mount Tipton.

White Cliffs Wagon Trail - This historic trail near Kingman follows the route of an old wagon road and offers a moderately challenging hike through scenic desert terrain.

Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument - Access from the Arizona Strip, this remote and rugged area offers several hiking opportunities, including the stunning Toroweap Overlook.

Wild Cow Springs Campground - This area offers hiking trails with beautiful desert scenery and access to nearby attractions like Lake Mead.

Music Mountain - Located near Chloride, this hike offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and interesting rock formations.

Make sure you bring the right gear and supplies for your hike. Hiking boots are essential, as the terrain can be rocky and uneven. Break them in before you go, nothing is worse than sore feet. A hat and sunscreen are also essential to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Depending on the length and difficulty of your hike, you might want to bring additional equipment, such as a compass or a first-aid kit. Be sure to check the weather forecast and adjust your gear accordingly.

Safety Tips

Safety is crucial when hiking through the desert. Stay on marked trails, and watch where you step. Be aware of your surroundings and any potential hazards, including snakes and other wildlife.

If you’re hiking alone, let someone know your expected route and return time. Bring a map of your hiking route or have a good idea of the path you’ll take. Take a compass, and your cell phone. Additionally, bring a basic first-aid kit in case of emergencies.
